Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
GERMANY , Bulgaria , Austria | 120 minutes | 2017
Modern-day ramble against a backdrop of prejudice and hostility between a group of German workers and some ornery Bulgarian villagers. A group of German workers arrive in a remote corner of Bulgaria to set up a worksite. The language barrier combined with a hostile reception by the villagers lead to violent tensions. Produced by Maren Ade (Toni Erdmann, Louve d’or at FNC 2016), Western relies on a subtly woven story in which the play of alliances and small betrayals threatens to turn a standoff into something much worse.IN COMPETITION
