Love makes you soar? No, but it can give you supernatural powers, at least according to the Norwegian director’s fourth feature. Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st) is back with this love story about a woman whose burning passion triggers the onset of paranormal powers. A sort of Scandinavian Carrie (1976) — the film was shot in Sweden — Thelma merges the thriller with the coming-of-age tale, with a generous pinch of straight-up horror. Impressive on every level.
