A warm, compassionate story of female emancipation set in Vancouver’s Chinese community is well served by two talented actresses. Twenty-three years after Double Happiness, Mina Shum once again tackles the gulf between tradition and modernity. This time, her heroine is a reserved older woman who is forced to re-evaluate her role in society in the face of her husband’s cowardice, casting off her sheltered existence to discover the world and herself. Sandra Oh and Cheng Pei Pei brilliantly portray the mother-daughter duo.
