Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
BHUTAN | 132 minutes | 2016
Spirituality and mystery commingle against a Himalayan backdrop in a Bhutanese cinematic oddity that also happens to be directed by a woman, Dechen Roder. Kinley, an impassive police officer, investigates the disappearance of a Buddhist nun. All clues point toward Choden, the village “demoness.” He sets out to track her down, but the suspect thwarts his plans by immediately proposing a pact and a road trip. With its disconcerting story and lyricism reminiscent of Apichatpong Weera- sethakul, the film is a phantasmagoria with feminist overtones.IN COMPETITION
