The renowned Russian director is back with a black-and-white metaphysical drama about the Holocaust where romance meets theories of history. Told from the point of view of three protagonists — an aristocratic Russian woman, a French policeman and a Nazi of officer — Konchalovsky’s film is a powerful cry of anguish. The radical, unsettling structure, claustrophobic 4:3 framing and impeccable cinematography by Aleksandr Simonov chillingly underscore Hitler’s famous “Aryan paradise.”
